Feeling confident with a cold sore
You are going to hear it a lot from us about feeling confident with cold sores, it’s because you’re not alone. Over 50% of Americans have the cold sore or virus, some healthcare professionals say it can be as high as 80%. Unfortunately, some of us get them more frequently and severely than others. Even famous celebrities get them, don’t look to us to out them, but its true.
So, to help you feel less self-conscious during a cold sore or fever blister outbreak, we’ve pulled together some tips from healthcare professionals and you got it, fashion experts.
Wear what makes you feel good
First, wear what makes you feel good. Put on your favorite blouse or shirt … put on those jeans or dress you know makes you feel great. Its not about “dressing up or trying to distract from the cold sore”, it’s about “feeling good”. Wear what makes you feel good! Experts agree, wearing what makes you feel good, makes you feel confident. If it’s heels, then its heels. If it a new jacket, then break it out and put it on.
Makeup and shaving
Put on makeup, shave or don’t shave … while you should not feel the need to hide your cold sore, do what makes you feel good. Put on makeup, style your hair the way you always wanted, go for the unshaven look. But remember, you’re doing what makes you feel stronger and more confident. Our only watch-out is with make-up or shaving, particularly when a cold sore is in the weeping phase, be careful not to transfer the virus and start the cycle over.
Eat healthy
Whether it’s a cold sore outbreak or something that makes you feel blah, eating healthier fuels and energizes your mind and body. Stay away from foods that are acidic or triggers for cold sores. Try focusing on some foods and proteins that are fresh and lean. Try a new dish, get creative… focus your mind and energy on that next favorite dish!
Relax
And we don’t mean “relax”, we mean find ways “to relax”. Stress and fatigue are major triggers for cold sore or fever blister outbreaks. Take a hot shower, sink into a scented bath, listen to some of your favorite music. Let your mind decompress from the day. Get to bed an hour earlier or take that nap if you can. Extra rest and sleep refresh the body and mind helping reduce your tension, letting you worry less about your cold sore. As we’ve mentioned, cold sores are frequently triggered by stress and fatigue, so it’s a great time to start a meditation or sleep routine to avoid future outbreaks.
Exercise
If you’re already an exercise regular, stay that way, go to the gym, do your yoga or start that run or bike ride. For those of us that are less regular with our physical activity, going for a walk or hike is a good way to keep the blood flowing. It can be mind-clearing to break a sweat and focus on health. Exercise is also a great stress and tension reducer. We do recommend getting out there when you can.
You’re not alone
Did we mention, you’re not alone! OK… remember it, you’re not alone. Do the things that make you feel confident, helping your body and mind find that balance, especially when you’re dealing with a cold sore or fever blister outbreak.
